Singing with a Tracheostomy

Hi Friends,  I didn’t think I could sing with a tracheostomy.  I have a Passy Muir speaking valve, which allows air in through my tracheostomy, but to exhale it travels past my vocal chords.  Without this I cannot sing, where with it I can sing a bit. Here is my rendition of “Give Me Jesus” by Fernando Ortega. This is my first performance since having a “Trach” put it in.  The tracheostomy results from occasional vocal chord paralysis.  Also, my swallowing problem causes food and drinks to slip into my lungs, so now I eat through a tube in my stomach.  These conditions result from Multiple System Atrophy, an Atypical Parkinsonism disease.   Here is the video.  Dan Brooks

In my ignorance, I thought with a trach you would not be able to talk. Not only can you talk but you can SING!! Praise God. You are a miracle, Dan, and you continue to inspire, uplift and encourage so many people. Hearing this filled me with joy and brought tears to my eyes. Keep singing, Brother. Love you, Peggy

Your voice sounds normal/doesn't sound like someone who had a tracheostomy! How do you do that?

Anonymous friend, I benefit from the strength I once had in my voice, and that, coupled with a "Passy Muir Valve", gives me the help I need. The valve goes over the Trach tube and doesn't allow the air to exit through the trach, forcing the exhale to go up through my vocal cords and out my mouth. What an invention! Increasingly, even with the P.M. valve, it is hard to sing more than a song or two without coughing, violently. Keep your prayers coming! Thanks so much. Dan

Shalom Sir: I don't know why; but for years I've thought about singing with a tracheostomy. After I was Saved, Holy Spirit let me know He didn't create me to be a singer. I don't have any desire to be famous! This evening, He had me research this--which led to your blog. I'm waiting for a doc to call me to schedule a procedure for esophageal stricture. I know 5 people The Great Physician has resurrected!

The nurse at the free clinic who has dysautonomia thinks I have it too. I pray Sar Shalom continues to give you & your family His joy & peace.
